Today’s Artist Interview Is With Christina Colwell From Murray, Utah

Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Christina:
I have been an artist all my life. I believe children are naturally artistic in how they experience the world. I guess you could say I never grew up.

Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Christina:
I remember drawing pictures of birds and trees in preschool. I liked coloring books and paper dolls. I later made my own coloring books and paper dolls. My technical skills may have been lacking but didn’t lack in imagination. My siblings and I invented all kinds of scenarios in all kinds of games of “Let’s pretend…” If you can imagine a thing…you are closer to creating it.

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Christina
: Painting and art have mostly been a hobby to maintain sanity. My husband and I have recently made a business of it. We have been nurturing a tender seedling with the limited resources that we have. Our seedling business has been growing and is starting to sprout little branches and buds. We are excited to see how it will fill out.

Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Christina:
My hands are working on something 4 to 12 hours a day. However, my mind is working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I often wake up with new ideas or solutions to creative problems.

Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Christina:
I’m a mixed media artist in flight. I have not yet landed and seized upon One single medium. When I think I’ve settled on something..I get an irresistible idea that takes me in another direction. Perhaps I lack focus but I’m having fun adjusting the binoculars..

Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Christina:
I find inspiration from my childhood, my childhood imaginings, my family, everyday life, nature and the great outdoors, other artists, books, dreams, religion, everywhere.

Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Christina:
The best creativity battery recharger is a walk along the beach. There is so much energy on the seashore. It is wonderful. I guess I live in the wrong state. Meanwhile, walks, hikes, taking pictures and hanging out with my husband will do just fine.

Whopple: What was your first job?
Christina:
Cleaning. Certainly not a dream job.

Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Christina:
Often times, when I am working on a project I get so wrapped up in it I’m oblivious to everything around me and inside me. The belly sometimes gets to rumbling pretty good before I will put down the brush. After a project is completed and I just want to revel in the accomplishment, nothing is better than lightly buttered popcorn and a glass of Chardonnay. Mmmmm… sounds so good right now.

Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Christina:
I remember a time in my life when my heart and soul was dark with despair. Long story there. It was when I came to faith in Christ that hope came alive in me once more.

Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Christina:
I want to move to Depot Bay Oregon with my husband, live near a beach, open a shop across the street from the Whale Center, have a studio in the back and make a modest living doing what I love and hanging out with whom I love.

Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Christina:
My goal as an artist is to stay young at heart and not allow old person brain take hold of me. I don’t mind being a late bloomer but I don’t want to be an old cranky person.

Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Christina: There have been many exciting moments. I’m not sure I could pick just one. When my art speaks to someone and they buy it. That is exciting. I gave a painting to a friend and it moved her to tears. That was exciting. When I won my first award in an art show, that was exciting. When I complete a project and I love it, that is exciting.
